Personal Interests Crochet Geometric Grannies
This afghan is constructed from a fairly simple granny square pattern. I used the one described in the directions below, but any granny square can be used if it can be sized, or various granny squares of different sizes that are of equivalent sizes to the ones used here. The dimensions of each size square is noted below. There are lots of great books out there with granny squares of various sizes. Experiment with your own patterns. I used worsted weight yarn, about 4 skeins of tan (colour A), 4 skeins of dark teal (colour B) and 6 skeins of black flecks (main colour). I used a J crochet hook, and you'll need a yarn needle for connecting the squares.
Granny square pattern: Ch 6. slip stitch to first chain to form ring. Rnd 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in ring. (Ch 3, 3 dc) three more times, ch 2, sc in top of initial ch 3. Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc around sc from last round. Dc in next three stitches. In corner, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc), ch 1, dc in next dc, skip next dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in corner, dc in next three stitches, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in corner, ch 1, dc in next dc, skip next dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, (2 dc, ch 2) in corner. Sc in top of initial chain. Round 3. Ch 3, dc around sc from last round. Dc in each stitch across to corner. (2 dc, ch 3, 1 dc, ch 1) in corner. (1 dc in each chain space, ch 1, skip next dc) across to corner. (dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in corner. Dc in each stitch across. (2 dc, ch 3, 1 dc, ch 1) in corner. (1 dc in each chain space, ch 1, skip next dc) across to corner. (dc, ch 2) in corner, sc in top of initial chain to close. Round 4. Ch 3, dc around sc from last round. Dc in each stitch across to corner. (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc), ch 1, dc in next chain space, skip next dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1 across to corner, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in corner, dc in each dc across, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in corner, ch 1, dc in next chain chapace, skip next dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, across to corner (2 dc, ch 2) in corner. Sc in top of initial chain. Rounds 5-8. Repeat rounds 3-4 twice. At end of last round, ch 3 and join with a slip stitch to finish off.
The afghan is built from the granny squares starting in the center. The first granny square is 6 rounds in Color A. The second round of squares is 3 rounds, 3 in colour B and 2 in MC, attached to two adjacent sides of the square. The third round of squares is build from 1-round squares, 19 of them, 10 in color A, and 9 in MC. Round 4 is built from 5-round squares, 5 of them, 3 in colour B and 2 in MC. Round 5, is built from 3-round squares, 11 of them, 6 in colour A, and 5 in MC. Round 6 is built from 2-round squares, 19 of them, 10 in colour B and 9 in MC. Round 7 is built from 4-round squares, 11 of them, 6 in colour A, and 5 in MC. Round 8 is built from 8-round squares, 7 of them, 4 in colour B and 3 in MC. Round 9 is built from 4-round squares, 17 of them, 9 in Colour A, and 8 in MC. Round 10 is built from 6-round squares, 13 of them, 7 in Color B and 6 in MC. Round 11 is made from 3-round squares, 29 of them, 15 in Color A, and 14 in MC. Assemble as shown in layout above using whip-stitch in back loops only. Border: Rnd 1: Join MC in any corner. *3 sc in corner, sc in each st across. Repeat from * around. Join with slip stitch to first stitch. Fasten off. Rnd 2: Join Colour A in last stitch from round 1. Sc in next sc to middle stitch of corner from previous round. *3 sc in next stitch to form corner. Sc in each sc across to middle stitch from previous corner. Repeat from * across until rejoining initial stitch. Slip stitch to join and fasten off. Round 3. Repeat Rnd 2 in Colour B. Fasten off. Tuck in all ends.
Alternate: To use different grannies for each size square, you'll need squares of the following sizes. (These are approximate.) 1-round: 1.5-1.75" ~ 4 cm
This afghan is part of a series of afghans I made using squares of differing sizes. Each one was made with squares of different types: random solid colours, different colour rounds, alternating colour rounds, same size/same colour, etc. Feel free to mix and match. Check out the whole series:
