Geometric Squares 2

I made this afghan using traditional granny squares  of various sizes using the join-as-you-go method.

geometric squares #2

For this afghan, you will need granny squares of several sizes.  The sizes are determined by the number of rounds of the pattern followed.  Assuming I've counted correctly, you will need the following numbers of each size:

1 Round: 110
2 Rounds: 37
3 Rounds: 24
4 Rounds: 20
5 Rounds: 11
6 Rounds: 9
7 Rounds: 5
8 Rounds: 4
9 Rounds: 4
10 Rounds: 3

They need to be assembled according to the following layout:

Geometric Squares #2 Layout

You can start anywhere, but I started mine with the large Round 10 square in the bottom corner of the layout and built up from there.  The squares on the layout are labeled by size.  I used scrap colours for my afghan, so the colours are pseudo-random, but I was trying not to get two squares of the same colour right next to each other.  Other viable options include using only two colours, or making squares of the same size the same colour, etc.  I also saved one colour for the border, and though it is inside the main body, it does not appear in any of the squares along the outer edge.

The key to joining as you go with all the different sizes is to match up with number of dc clusters on each square.  A 10-round granny square has 10 dc clusters on each side, whereas a 1-round square has just one.  On the sides you are joining, replace the chain between clusters with a slip stitch in the adjoining square.  Seems don't count as clusters, and so you will have one more join than you will cluster, with seems both joining to the same chain space.

Border: Join with slip stitch to any chain space with border Colour A.

Rnd 1: Complete a round like that of the granny square with 3dc in each chain space (or around each seem) with ch-1 spaces between then, (3dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in each corner space.  Fasten off and switch to border color B.

Rnd 2: With a contrasting colour, B, join with slip stitch to any chain space.  2 sc in each space, ch 2.  Repeat around with (2 sc, 3 ch, 2 sc) in each corner.  Join with slip stitch and fasten off.  Return to colour A.

Rnd 3.  Complete another granny round like Rnd 1 in same colour as Rnd 1.  Fasten off and tuck in all ends.

This afghan is part of a series of afghans I made using squares of differing sizes.  Each one was made with squares of different types: random solid colours, different colour rounds, alternating colour rounds, same size/same colour, etc.  Feel free to mix and match.  Check out the whole series:
