Math Notes, Counting Methods

This page links you to four different kinds of basic counting methods for all different kinds of problems.  The simplest is given in Counting Methods I.  This method is sometimes referred to as the Fundamental Counting Principle.  Counting Methods III and IV are also common methods with special names, Permutations and Combinations.  Counting Methods II fills in the last possible combination of Repetition and Order, but it doesn't come up all that often, but I've included it for the sake of completion.

Counting Methods I -- With Repetition, Order Matters: Fundamental Counting Principle
Counting Methods II -- With Repetition, Order Doesn't Matter
Counting Methods III -- No Repetition, Order Matters: Permutations
Counting Methods IV -- No Repetition, Order Doesn't Matter: Combinations
