Personal Interests Crochet Spiral Granny
Materials: 5 skeins each Berella 4 Black (A), Aqua (B), Burgundy (C) and Light Tapestry Gold (D) or 4 colours of your choice. (17.5 oz/500 g/1050 yds each) Pairs of contrasting colours, or shades of light to dark of the same hue also produce the distinct spiral pattern. This afghan can also be done with twice the quantity of just 2 alternating shades. This quantity of yarn produces an afghan roughly 70 inches by 70 inches. These directions use standard abbreviations for chain (ch), slip stitch (sl), single crochet (sc) and double crochet (dc). Hook: Size G. Tapestry needle. Start: Begin by making 4 single row granny squares, one in each colour. Begin by whip stitching the squares together in a square. Be sure to use a yarn that matches at least one of the squares you are stitching.
Round 1 of spiral: Join colour A to exterior corner of same colour. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in corner; *ch 1-3 dc in next ch space, repeat from * to corner, ch 3. Join colour B in corner and repeat side, and likewise for colours C and D. Slip stitch all chain 3 edges to first dc cluster to make corner. One can continue the rounds here in this fashion for the entirety of the afghan, however, the main drawback is that since you will be working simultaneously with 4 different yarns, they will become easily tangled as you turn the afghan and you will have to stop frequently to untangle them. Therefore, the instructions below will help avoid that issue. Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as chain 3 space for next round) in colour A, 3 dc, *ch 1-3 dc in next chain space, repeat from * across to corner. Repeat side with each colour.
Round 3: from here, the rounds all start running together as a good spiral should. In ch 3 from colour B, 3 dc-ch 1-3 dc as though it were a regular granny square corner. Do the same for each colour. Now ch 1-3 dc in each chain space across. When you come to the corner, repeat 3 dc-ch 1-3 dc Do the same for each colour. Continue in the round until all the colours are collected together. The "square" will now be obviously uneven but this will be corrected at the end of the spiral. Once you've collected all the edges as shown below, take the time to untangle the yarns.
For all succeeding rounds: Complete as a(n unending) granny square with ch 1-3 dc in each chain space, and 3 dc-ch 3-3 dc in each corner space by doing one side at a time in each colour in succession. By doing only one side at a time, the yarns don't get twisted and remain in the same relation to each other throughout. You can do a round at a time and stop when you hit the edge of the previous colour, but that will not prevent tangling, and while the rounds are small, this will happen extremely frequently. Finish the granny square when you start on the last skein of the shortest colour. (I found when completing my afghan that my black was ever-so-slightly thicker, and thus shorter, than the others.) Final Round of Granny: For the topmost edge, when getting to the corner when you will stop, 4 dc in corner. Continue on next edge with other three colours. Repeat for each remaining colour. End top edge in corner, and continue with next two colours, etc. to end. When I completed mine, I worked the border and the last round simultaneously so as to continue avoid tangling the yarns if you continue using all the same 4 colours. You can do a single colour for the border if you like, in which case, fasten off three of the colours. Border: 2 sl in last double crochet, 2 sc in corner space, sc across the side to corner. In corner stitch, 3 sc to turn side. Do this for 3 rounds (3 sides in each colour). In colour A, sl in next 2 stitches, *ch 9, sl in 4th ch from hook, ch 6, (skip 3 sc) sc in 4th sc, repeat from * side. Do for each colour, except that every other colour should skip the first 2 sl. In second round of A-frame stitches, alternated sc in front, then in back of previous row of A-frames across the row. When the second side is finished, fasten off.
