Pentagons

layout of pentagons

The pentagons afghan is made from 32 pentagons.  The pentagon pattern is taken from Beyond the Square: Crochet Motifs by Edie Eckman.  Assembly instructions are original.

Color A=hot pink (6 skeins), Color B=black (5 skeins), Color C=white (4 skeins), Color D=green (3 skeins), Color E=beige (2 skeins).  Make 4 with Color A centers (rounds 1-3), and Color B exteriors (rounds 4-6) for corners.  Remaining 28 squares are assembled first in 3 strips of 6 and 2 strips of 5.  Central colors are chosen more or less randomly, but all exterior rounds are in Color A.

Pentagons:

Ch 4 and join with sl st to form loop.

Round 1. Ch 1, 10 sc in ring, joing with sl st to first sc.

Round 2. Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same stitch, ch 2, skip 1 sc, *2 dc in next sc, ch 2, skip 1 sc, repeat from * three times, join with sl st to top of ch 3.

Round 3. ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next dc, ch 3, (ch 3 sc in 3rd ch from hook: counts as picot-3), ch 3, skip next ch-2 sp, *dc in next 2 dc, ch 3, picot-3, ch 3, skip next ch-2 sp, repeat from * three more times, join with sl st to top of ch-3. Change color.

Round 5. Ch 3 (counts as dc), *dc in next dc, ch 4, skip next ch-4 space, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next ch-3 sp, ch 4, skip next ch-4 sp, dc in next dc; repeat from * around, omitting last dc, join with sl st to top of ch-3.

For first pentagon in strip, fasten off.  For any other pentagon, sl st in each st to corner.  Join to previous pentagon alternating long sides joined, corner joined, etc.  For long-side join: insert hook in back loop of facing and back loop of pentagon to be joined (wrong side facing), complete slip st through both loops. Continue sl stitches across in this way to corner and fasten off.  For corner join, sl st in this way in the corner. Fasten off.

Assembly of stripes: Color B to join Pentagons.  Connect with slip st in a corner space.  Ch 1, sc, ch 1, 2 sc in ch 1 sp. on sides that join pentagons on an edge, sc in stitch to corner, 2 sc, ch 1, 2c in corner sp.  On sides that connect to a point: 4 sc, 4 hdc, 8 dc, 1 decreasing dc (yo, insert hook in stitch before corner, yo, pull through, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, insert in stitch after corner, yo, pull through, to, pull through 2 loops, yo pull through all remaining loops), 8 dc, 4 hdc, sc to corner.  Repeat corner.  Continue around to beginning (on external rows, join to corner pentagons.  Filling in spaces: join at the 7th st with slip st. 2 sc, 2 hdc, 5 dc, decrease (skipping 2 spaces between needle insertion), 5 dc, 2 hdc, 2 sc, sl st, fasten off.  Rejoin one stitch before last row, 1 sc, 1 hdc, 6 dc, decreasing as in previous row, 5 dc, 1 hdc, 2 sc, sl st, fasten off.  Join stripes according to diagram.

Border.  Join with Color E.  Continue filling in spaces as above, but instead of fastening off, sc around to next space, and repeat.  After 2 rounds, switch to Color D and continue this way for 4 more rounds.  Then switch to color C. And finally, Colour A.  By the time you get to color A, the sides should be mostly straight, but additional descrease stitches may be needed to flatten the edges.
