Afghan is made from 63 octagons (7x9) and 48 squares (6x8) in the spaces between the octagons.  Both patterns are taken from Go Crochet! by Ellen Gormley.  My afghan is made from leftovers and single skeins with random combinations.  The yarn I used was all wool and wool-blend here.  Final rounds are all done in Black.

Octagons: With A, ch 4, join with sl st to form ring.

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in ring, ch 3, *3 dc in ring, ch3, repeat from * 2 more times. join with sl st in top of beginning ch 3. Change to B.

Round 2: Join with sl st in any corner, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in corner, *ch 3, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp, repeat from * 2 more times, ch 3. join with sl st in top of beginning ch-3. Change to C.

Round 3: join with sl st in any corner, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in corner, *ch 1, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp, repeat from * 6 more times, ch 1, joint with sl st in top of beginning ch 3. Change to D.

Round 4. joing with sl st in any corner sp., ch 3, *dc in each of next 7 stitches, (dc, ch 3, dc) in ch-3 sp; repeat from * 6 more times, dc in each of next 7 stitches, (dc, ch 3) in ch-3 sp, join with sl st in top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off.

Squares: with A, ch 4, join with sl st to form ring.

Round 1: Ch 3, dc in ring, ch 3, *2 dc in ring, ch 3; repeat from * 2 more times, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3.

Round 2. Sl st in next st. *Ch 2, 8 dc in ch-3 sp, ch 2, sl st in each of next 2 sts; repeat from * 3 more times, omitting last sl st.  Fasten off. Change to B.

Round 3. Join with sc in back look only of the first dc of an 8-dc group, sc in back loop in next 3 sts, ch 3, sc in next 4 sts, skip st sts and ch sps; *ch 1, sc in back loop in next 4 sts; repeat from * 2 more times, ch 1, skip st sts and ch-sps; join with sl st in first sc.

Round 4. ch 1, working in both loops of sts, sc in each of next 4 sts; *3 sc in ch-3 sp, sc in each of next 9 sts; re from * 2 more times, 3 sc in ch-3 sp, sc in each of last 5 sts; join with sl st in top fo first sc.  Fasten off.

Whip stitch together with squares filling the space between octagons.  Tidy up the border by doing sc all around.
