Personal Interests Crochet L-Grannies
L-Grannies are made from single-round granny squares. For the afghan described here, I used 1260 of them. That sounds like a lot, but it's perfect for a scrap afghan, or to do from primary colours in purpose. L-grannies can be made into a number of larger shapes and combined into patterns for a number of creative looks.
L-grannies come in 3 basic varieties: 1) corner square made from 3 of one colour and 1 of a second colour
2) left L-granny made from 4 of one colour and 2 of a second colour vs. 3) right L-granny made from 4 of one colour and 2 of a second colour. (The only difference between 2 and 3 is the whether the "L" opens left or right. It matters for some patterns.)
These blocks can be combined in a number of ways to create larger blocks and patterns.
4 corner squares can be combined to create 1 larger square:
4 L-grannies can be combined to create 1 larger square. (You can fill in the central space with an extra single-round granny or leave open.)
L-grannies can be stacked into rows in stripes. They look a bit like F's or E's
L-grannies can be combined, one left and one right, to form a U-shape.
They can also be combined to form s-patterns.
Or you can combine them, as I did, doing stripes of U's and stripes of "F"'s.
Since I was making mine from scrap yarn, I used solids for the main "colour" and the variegated for the secondary "colour". I expect this pattern would look really sharp in black and white. When you're done, add a little border to tidy up the edge.
