Personal Interests Crochet Interlocked Squares
This pattern is to build an afghan of this layout: The colour changes aren't used in the actual afghan (though they could be), rather they are used to highlight how the squares are connected to each other. The afghan is built from 4 colours. I used: Color A=Hot Pink, Color B=Cactus Flower (green), Color C=Blueberry, and Color D= Off White. I used 2 skeins of Color A, 3 skeins of Color B, 5 skeins of Color C, and 6 skeins of Color D. Make: 30 granny squares of 4 rounds in Color A. 2 rounds in Color B. For 5 of those squares, add three rows in Color C. Make 8 2-square combos, and 3 3-square combos as follows for each: Join Color C to corner with slip stitch, (ch 3, 2dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch1) in corner. Repeat (3dc, ch 1) in each ch1 space across. (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch1) in corner. *(3 dc, ch1) in each ch1 space three times. 2 dc in next ch space. Ch 15, 2dc in ch space in middle of second square (3 ch spaces from corner). ch 1, (3 dc, ch1) in each chain space to corner. (3dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch1) in corner, repeat (3dc, ch 1) in each chain space across to corner, repeat corner. For 2 square combo, continue around until you return to the chain space before where the ch 15 joins. For a 3 square combo, add another square after the second corner just as you attached the first one repeating from * on the third square. 1 dc in same space as 2 dc (attached to ch 15). 1 hdc, 2 dc in first ch of ch 15, ch1, (skip 3 chains, 3 dc in next chain, ch 1) repeat once, skip 3 chains, in last ch 2 dc, 1 hdc, sl st in last stitch of 2dc cluster in previous square, dc, ch 1, (3dc, ch1) in next ch-1 space, repeat to corner and continue granny square patter to first chain 3, slip stitch to end row. Next Row: Continue granny pattern around (start as on previous round) to connecting bridge. *in the last ch space, 2dc, so a decrease dc stitch (yo, insert hook between clusters, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops, insert hook in ch sp between squares, yo, pull up a loop, pull through two loops, yo, pull through remaining loops on hook), 2 dc in same space, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1) in next space, continue from * to make inside corner, ch 1. continuing granny square pattern around ti next connecting corner. Repeat until last ch sp before initial 3 chains on row. Sl st to close. Fasten off and switch to Color D. (Continue one more round in Color C for a wider interlocking piece between squares.) Round 9. Fasten in a corner ch-3 space and continue as with previous C round to inside corner. * 2 dc in last ch space. decrease stitch (yo and insert hook in ch sp, yo and pull up loop, yo and pull through 2 loops, insert hook around central post of previous row as for front post dc, yo and pull up loop, yo and pull through 2 loops, insert hook in chain space on post between squares, yo and pull up loop, yo and pull through 2 loops on hook, yo and pull through remaining loops.) 2 dc in same ch space. repeat from *, then continue around as for granny square to next inside corner. Complete as for previous corner and around to end. sl st to original ch 3 to end round. Round 10. (Change color to D here if you haven't already.) Continue as granny square to inside corner. 2 dc in last ch sp, decrease stitch as in previous row, 1 dc in ch sp on post, decrease stitch around next inside corner, 2 dc in ch sp, ch 1 continue to next corner as for granny square to end. close gap between squares by replace ch stitch between 3-dc clusters with slip stitch in ch sp on other square to ch 3 space at corner. Assembly: with slip stitches for raised joins or whip stitches for flat joins, assembly according to diagram above. Border: With color D, join in a corner and proceed as for granny square. At each seem, 1 dc in ch space, 1 dc in seam stitch, 1 dc in ch sp, ch 1, continue as before. Repeat for a second round. Optional: make pom-poms for corners.
