I made this afghan using "baby weight" yarn or "sport weight" yarn, and using combinations of two shades at time everywhere except the center square.  You can make the afghan lighter by using using two 2-ply yarn instead (or a single shade of worsted weight); you can make the afghan bigger by using a larger needle, like an N, and using two strands of worsted weight or bulky yarn.  This version is pretty heavy, and is a good size for a bedspread on a twin bed.  Add another row of 6 squares to make it big enough for a larger bed.  The colours used in this afghan were mostly "kids brites" shades: dark blue, turquoise, lime green, neon orange, hot pink, perwinkle, lavendar and white.

Begin by making 24 two-round granny squares in white.  The remaining portions of the squares are done making the squares half a light combination and half a dark combination simultaneously.  As follows:

Rnd 3-4.  Join light combination (perwinkle and white) to one corner.  Chain 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc, ch 1.  3dc, ch 1 in next chain space across to corner.  3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 1 in corner, then 3 dc, ch1 in each chain space across (stop before the last corner).  Drop loop and attach pair of dark shades (turquoise and green) in the corner and repeat as with the light shade to corner where the light shade begins.  In corner, 3 dc, ch 1, hdc in top chain of initial light-coloured cluster, ch 3 and turn.  2 dc, ch 1 in chain stitch made in corner, then continue as before for granny square until you reach the last chain space of dark shade.  Drop loop and pick up light loop.  Complete corner as with dark shade (3 dc, ch1 in corner, hdc in top ch of initial 3-ch stitch), ch 3 and turn, 2 dc, ch in corner, and proceed across as for granny square to last corner before dark shade begins.  3 dc, ch 3 in corner, slip stitch to top chain to close round.  Pick up dark loop and complete the last corner the same way.

Complete the remaining rounds the same way for the following colour combinations:

Rnd 5-6: Light: white and lavender; Dark: orange and pink.

Rnd 7-8: Light: green and white; Dark: Dark blue and periwinkle.

Rnd 9-10: Light: orange and white; Dark: turquoise and pink.

Whip stitch together with light sides and dark sides together to form diamonds as in image.  Stitch light sides with either white or orange, dark sides with turquoise or pink to blend.

Border: Do (one or) two-rounds each of border in the following colours: Periwinkle and lavendar, lavender and orange, lavender and pink, green and lavender, green and pink, green and dark blue, dark blue and turquoise.  Each round should follow the regular granny square pattern.
