This afghan was constructed from two granny squares I found in the book When Granny Meets Filet (by Bendy Carter), patterns #1 and #40.  You'll need 4 colors.  3 oz. of colour A (turquoise), 8 oz of Colour B (dark heather grey), 34 oz. of Colour C (soft white with flecks), and 12 oz of colour D (bright red).

Square Style #1: Make 72.

With colour A, ch 4 and join with slip stitch to form a loop.

Rnd 1. Ch 3, 4 dc in ring, *ch 7, 5 dc in ring, three more times from *, ch 7 and join with slip stitch to third chain of initial stitch.  Fasten off.

Rnd 2. Join with Colour B with slip stitch in initial ch-3.  Ch 3 and dc in same stitch.  *Dc in each stitch to end.  Dc a second time in the last stitch.  Ch 10.   Dc twice in next dc.  Repeat from * around three times to Ch 10.  Slip stitch in third chain of initial ch-3.  Fasten off.

Rnd 3. Repeat Rnd 2 with Colour C.

Rnd 4. Join with Colour D with a slip stitch to initial ch-3.  *Dc across to last dc.  Three dc in last dc.  Pull up Round 2 Ch-10 through Rnd 1 Ch-7, and pull up Rnd 3 Ch-10 through remaining loop of Rnd 2 Ch-10.  Sc in Rnd 3 Ch-10.  Ch-3, sc in same chain-space.  3 dc in first dc on next side.  Repeat from * around to initial chain-3.  2 dc in same stitch as initial chain, fasten to initial chain with a slip stitch.  Fasten off.

 

Square Style #2: Make 71.

With Colour C, chain 4. Join with slip stitch in initial chain to form ring.

Rnd 1. Ch 4, (dc, ch1) 7 times, ch 1.  Join with slip stitch.

Rnd 2. Slip stitch in next chain space.  *Ch 7, slip stitch in next chain space, ch 5, slip stitch in next chain space.  Repeat 4 times around.

Rnd 3. slip stitch in next three chains.  *Ch 7, slip stitch in same chain space, ch 5, slip stitch in ch-5 space on previous round, ch 5, slip stitch in ch-7 space on previous round.  Repeat three more times around.  Slip stitch to botton slip stitch of initial Ch 7.

Rnd 4. Slip stitch in next three chains.  Ch 3, 2 dc in ch-7 space.  *(ch 1, 3 dc) in next 2 ch-5 spaces, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch-7 space.  Repeat from * to last ch-7 space.  3 dc, ch 3 in ch-7 space.  Slip stitch to initial chain-three.  Fasten off.

 

Assemble squares, alternating square #1, and square #2, with square #1 on all corners in an 11 x 13 grid.

Border. 

Uses special stitch "V-stitch" made by (dc, ch 2, dc) in same stitch.

Rnd 1. With Colour C, join in one corner space with a slip stitch.  Sc, ch 2, 2 sc in chain space. *Sc in each stitch across to corner, (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in corner and repeat around from star to beginning corner.  Slip stitch to join, and slip stitch to chain space.

Rnd 2. Chain 5, dc in same chain space (counts as corner v-stitch). *Skip next two sc, V-stitch in next stitch; repeat from * to corner.  V-stitch in corner.  Repeat until you return to beginning corner; slip stitch in third chain to finish round.

Rnd 3. Ch 5, dc in chain space of corner, chain 2, dc in same corner.  *V-stitch in space between 2 v-stitches from round 2.  Repeat from * across to corner.  In corner space (ch 2, dc, ch 2, v-stitch, ch 2, dc).  Continue around to beginning corner.  There, ch 2, dc, ch 2 in initial corner space, slip stitch to third chain to finish round.

Rnd 4.  Slip stich to corner space.  Ch 1, (sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in corner space.  *Sc in each stich across to next corner space, (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in corner space.  Repeat around to initial ch 1.  slip stitch to join.  Fasten off.
