Circle in a Square Grannies

This afghan is made with a granny square (modified) from Beyond the Square: Crochet Motifs by Edie Eckman, using motif #113.  Using Color A=White (1 skein), Color B=Variegated (mine was a mixture of black, burgundy, pink, grey and brown) (3 skeins), Color C=Tea Green (4 skeins).

Make 48 squares

Ch 8. join with sl st into a ring.

Round 1. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 23 dc in ring. join with slip st.

Round 2. Ch 1, sc in same stitch, ch 5, skip next 2 dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, skip next 2 dc, *sc in next dc, ch 5, skip next 2 dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, skip next 2 dc, repeat from * around. join with slip stitch to first sc. Change to Color B.

Round 3. Ch 3 (counts as dc), (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same space. 3 dc in ch 3 space, *(3dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch 5 sp, 3 dc in ch-3 sp; repeat from * around. Join with slip stitch to top of ch 3.

Round 4. Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), skip 1 dc, dc in next dc, ch 1. *dc, ch 3, dc, ch 1) in corner space ** (dc in next dc, skip next dc, ch) four times, dc in next dc, ch 1; repeat from * around ending at **. (dc in next dc, skip 1 dc, ch 1) 3 times, join with sl st to third ch of ch-4.  Change to Color C.

Round 5. Ch 3 (counts as dc), *dc in each ch space and dc to corner (dc, ch 3, dc) in corner, repeat from * three times, dc in each ch 1 sp and dc to end of round. join with sl st to top of ch 3.

Round 6. Ch 1, *sc in each dc to corner, 5 sc in corner space, repeat from * three times, sc in each dc to end of round, join to first sc.  (For first square fasten off. For subsequent squares continue as joining: sl st to corner.  Taking back loop of facing square and back look of joining square (wrong side facing you), sl st in each stitch across.  If joining on two sides, continue joining with facing square and the second square (also wrong side facing).  This produces a raised edge between squares. Sewing into a rectangle 8 squares by 6.

Border (adapted from 50 more crocheted borders): Once all squares are joined, Round 1: with Color C, ch 1, sc around in each stitch and one stitch in each seam.  3 sc in central stitch on corners.  Continue around to join with sl st to first sc.  Round 2: ch 3, dc in each sc to corner, in central stitch in corner (dc, ch 1, dc).  Continue around to end of round, join with sl st.  Change to Color B.  Round 3. Ch 3, 2 dc in next 2 dc, *ch 1, skip next dc, dc in next 3 dc, repeat from * to corner. In corner space,  (dc, ch 3, dc).  Repeat around to end of round.  Round 4. Ch 4, *skip dc, dc in next dc, ch 1. Repeat from * to corner. (dc, ch 3, dc) in corner space.  Continue from * around to end of round. Change to Color C.  Round 5: Ch 1, *sc in each stitch to corner, 5 sc in corner space. repeat from * to end of round. Round 6. ch 1, sc in first sc, *ch 3 skip next sc, sc in next sc, repeat from * around to end of round.  Round 7. ch 1, sc in first sc, sc in next ch-3 sp, *ch 3, skip next ch-3 sp, 7 dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, skip next ch-3 sp, sc in next ch-3 sp; repeat from * around to end of round. finish off.
