Chevron Baby Blanket

This afghan was made with Caron Simply Soft, in white (MC) about 15 oz, and 7 rainbow colours about 4 oz each: Purple (A), bright blue (B), turquoise (C), lime green (D), sundrop yellow (E), bright orange (F), hot pink (G).

Each square is made as follows:

in MC, chain 4 and join into a loop with a slip stitch.

Round 1: Ch 3, 15 dc in loop, join with slip stitch to top of initial chain 3.

Round 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in same stitch.  Ch 2.  *Skip one dc, in next dc, 3 dc, ch2.  Repeat from * around.  Join with slip stitch to first ch 3.  Fasten off.

Round 3: Join colour A (or other colour) with slip stitch in any chain 2 space.  *Sc in chain space, front-post treble in empty stitch two rows down, sc in chain space.  Chain 3.  Repeat from * around.  Join with slip stitch to initial stitch.

Round 4: Chain 2, hdc in next two stitches, *2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc in chain three space.  Hdc in next three stitches, 3 sc in ch-3 space, **hdc in next three stitches.  Repeat from * around to end, stopping at ** on third repeat.  Join with slip stitch to initial chain two space.  Fasten off.

Make 17 in colour A, 17 in B, 17 in C, 17 in D, 19 in E, 19 in F, 18 in G.

Sew together in staggered rows as shown in image with the first and last rows with 10 squares (7 of them), and even numbered rows with 9 squares (6 of these rows).  Whip stitch squares together using yarns that match one of the adjoining squares. (this makes it tough to do rows as rows because of the changing colours, so I did them in wedges).

chevron baby afghan layout

Border: Join in a chain three space.  5 sc in ch-3 space, sc in each stitch along sides.  Starting one stitch before inside corners, insert needle in stitch, yo and bring up loop, insert needle in corner stitch, yo and bring up loop, insert needle in stitch after corner, yo and bring up hook, yo and pull through all loops on hook.  Continue with sc in each stitch to ch-3 space, and repeat around sides.  On long straight sides, where ch-3 spaces are joined, put two sc in each ch space on either sides of seam, continue with sc across in each stitch.  Join with slip stitch to first sc.
