Chenille Squares

I made this afghan using 9 different chenille yarns, 4 were light-coloured, 4 were dark-coloured and one was "medium" that I used as both a light and dark colour.  I used the following colours:

Colour A: Lofty Chenille (yellow): Light shade

Colour B: Lofty Chenille (green): Medium shade

Colour C: Lofty Chenille (beige): Light shade

Colour D: Lofty Chenille (dark pink): Dark shade

Colour E: Herrschners Bulky Chenille (dark blue): Dark shade

Colour F: Snowfall (blue): Light shade

Colour G: Snowfall (black/grey): Light shade

Colour H: Bohemian (indigo indulgence): Dark shade

Colour I: Bohemian (all that jazz): Dark shade

I used 5-6 balls per colour.  Needle size K.

Square (Make 96):

Row 1: With Colour A:  Ch 6. Sc in second ch from hook and in each chain after. (5 sc).  Ch 1, turn.

Row 2-4. Sc in each sc across  Ch 1 turn.  In last row, attach colour B.  (You may need to add one more row like this depending on how bulky the yarn is.  4 is fine for weight 6, but 5 is better for weight 4.)

Row 5: Turn 90-degrees. 5 sc down side of square.  Ch 1, sc in same corner.  4 more sc down bottom edge of square.  Ch 1, turn.

Row 6-7: Sc in each sc across to corner space.  (sc, ch, sc) in corner space, sc in each sc across to end.  Ch 1, turn.  At end of Row 7, attach Colour A.  (As each row grows, there will be one more sc on each side.)

Row 8-10: Repeat Row 6.  Change to Colour B at end of Row 10.

Row 11-13: Repeat Row 6.  Change to Colour A at end of Row 13.

Row 14-15: Repeat Row 6.  Fasten off at end of Row 15.  You should have 16 sc on each side.

For remaining squares change colours.  To replicate my pattern make 64 light/dark combination squares, 16 dark/dark combination squares, and 16 light/light combination squares.

Assembly is done in two stages: Assemble 64 dark/light squares into 16 larger squares with corner squares meeting, and stripes lining up.  Assemble 16 light/light squares into 4 larger squares the same way.  Assemble 16 dark/dark squares into 4 larger squares the same way.  The layout for these larger squares in shown below.  Use a whip stitch with right sides facing to do the assembly.  It's probably best not to use chenille for the stitching, and sewn from the back like this, the stitches won't show on the front anyway.

layout

Border: Row 1. Attach with slip stitch in corner a dark colour.  Sc in each sc across and (sc, ch, sc) in each corner, around.  Join with slip stitch.  Fasten off.

Row 2: Repeat Row 1 with a light colour.

Row 3: Repeat Row 1 with a dark colour.

This afghan is sizable, and quite heavy because of the bulky yarn, but really perfect to curl up with on a cold winter evening.
