4-Corner Circle Afghan

circle in the corner square pattern            red & black 4-corner circles

Shown above are the sample square and the assembled afghan.  The afghan is made with three colours.  Color A is red (4-5 oz).  Color B is Black (12 oz), and Color C is a white and black variegated yarn (Red Heart Zebra was used here; 25 oz).  I used crochet hook size I and a yarn needle.

Make 48 squares

With A, Ch 8. join with sl st into a ring.

Round 1. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 23 dc in ring. join with slip st.

Round 2. Ch 1, sc in same stitch, ch 5, skip next 2 dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, skip next 2 dc, *sc in next dc, ch 5, skip next 2 dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, skip next 2 dc, repeat from * around. join with slip stitch to first sc. Change to Color B.

Round 3. Join in 5-ch space.  Ch 1. * 7 sc in ch sp, sc in next sc, 3 sc in next ch space, sc in next sc.  Repeat from * 3 more times.  Slip stitch to initial ch.  Fasten off.  Change to Color C.

The next 3 "rounds" are only on 2 sides of the square.

Round 4.  Join with slip stitch to central sc of corner.  Ch 3.  Dc in next sc 12 times.  Ch 3.  Dc in same dc.  Dc in next sc 12 times.  Ch 3, turn.

Round 5. Ch 3. 12 dc across to corner.  (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in corner.  13 dc across to end.  Ch 3, turn.

Round 6.  Ch 3.  14 dc across to corner.  (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in corner space.  15 dc across.  Fasten off.  change to Color B.

Round 7.  (Complete round.)  Join in sc nor a corner (on a side halfway around on left of color change).  Ch 1.  Sc in same stitch.  Sc in each sc to beg Ch 3 of dc row.  Sc in dc.  2 sc in next dc.  3 dc  (for side + corner) in ch 3 space.  Sc in each dc across to corner space.  3 sc in corner.  Sc in each dc across .  4 sc in last dc, 2 sc in next dc, sc in next dc.  Sc in each sc across to corner.  3 sc in central sc of corner space (4 in chain space from round 3).  Sc in each sc across to start.  join with slip stitch.  Fasten off.

One square made.

Assembly: assemble 4 squares at a time into 12 larger squares with whip stitch.  Each large square should have the central circles pointing inward.

Border: Around each of these 12 large squares, complete one round of sc in Color B.

Assemble the 12 large squares into a 4x3 grid with whip stitch.

Border:

Rnd 1. join Color B with slip stitch to any sc.  Ch 1.  *Sc in each stitch to corner.  3 sc in corner.  Repeat from * around.  Join with slip stitch.  Fasten off.  Change to Color A.

Rnd 2. Repeat Round 1.  Change to Color C.

Rnd 3. join with slip stitch to any sc.  Ch 3.  *dc in each stitch to corner.  5 dc in corner.  Repeat from * around.  Join with slip stitch to initial chain.  Fasten off.  Change to Color B.

Rnd 4. Repeat Rnd 1.

This afghan would also look great in all solids, say a dark border, light main color, and bright circles, even multiple shades.  It would also look nice in autumn shades: orange circles, brown border, and your choice of autumnal variegated.
